The Wellness Unit data and evaluation team measures the impact of state-wide and community efforts on nutritional, physical activity and related behaviors of MA residents. They are responsible for monitoring and reporting on nutrition, physical activity, related health behaviors, and overweight and obesity health status of the Massachusetts population.

The unit obtains statistics from existing surveillance sources such as the Behavior Risk Survey System (BRFSS), and the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) and Youth Health Survey (YHS) and others to provide data on obesity trends, risk factors, and health disparities. Data is used to measure program impact on health behaviors such as sedentary behavior, fruit and vegetable consumption, sugar sweetened beverages intake, weight-related disorders, physical activity and overweight/obesity status.

This information is provided by the Wellness Unit within the Department of Public Health.
