With respect to Christmas tree lights, MDPH is primarily concerned with the safety hazard of young children playing with or mouthing the wires of any electrical lights. So, we strongly recommend that parents monitor their children at play to ensure that they do not mouth these or other wires. If a consumer sees a label on Christmas tree lights warning about lead content, these labels are required under California law for items sold in California as a result of Proposition 65, which is a labeling law that requires consumer products sold in California to notify consumers of the presence of a wide range of environmental contaminants in the product being sold.
