The Massachusetts Environmental Radiation Laboratory (MERL) performs radiological analyses on a variety of environmental and regulatory samples for the Radiation Control Program. Samples are submitted to MERL from regulatory activities performed by inspectors at the locations of the licensees of radioactive materials, and from emergency response activities where there has been an incident involving radiation. MERL also accepts samples submitted by other state and local agencies. MERL's goal is to provide accurate and consistent analysis results to the various clients served by the laboratory.

MERL maintains its standard of excellence in analytical capability by participation with a variety of federal agencies in interlaboratory quality assurance activities.
