Title: Advisory on Dental Treatment of Patients on Warfarin Therapy

Scope of Practice: Dentistry

The dentist providing dental treatment to a patient on Warfarin therapy should have close communication and collaboration with the clinician/physician who is administering the Warfarin therapy. A dentist who is properly CLIA (Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments)-certified and monitors a patient's INR (International Normalized Ratio) in his/her office should still receive information from the clinician/physician prior to dental treatment. Contact the Department of Public Health Bureau of Healthcare and Safety Quality in order to determine which type of CLIA certificate is required.
