After extensive discussions with interested parties, the Board of Registration in Pharmacy has voted that it will not require Board licensed pharmacies to stock the drug OxyContin®.

At a meeting on June 11, 2002, the Board finalized a vote authorizing pharmacies to determine whether to stock OxyContin®, effective July 1, 2002. Pharmacies that discontinue stocking the drug will be required to provide adequate advance notice to patients and prescribers and provide information on alternate sources for obtaining this medication. Several pharmacy chains drug stores have already developed alternate delivery models for providing this drug to patients with legitimate pain management needs. As of June 11, 2002, the Board has received reports of approximately 100 robberies at Massachusetts pharmacies during the past year.

The Pharmacy Board will continue to monitor the impact of this decision on the patient community and the appropriateness of this exception to Board regulations.
