Important Update Regarding Reporting of Elder Abuse
Alert! Reporting of Elder Abuse Change
Physician Assistants are mandated reporters of elder abuse. Effective July 1, 2004, MGL 19-A, Section 14 was amended to expand the statutory definition of elder abuse to include self-neglect. Self-neglecting elders are persons age 60 and older who have unmet essential needs for food, clothing, safe and secure shelter, personal care, supervision and medical care that result in serious harm, or in the immediate risk of serious harm, and the inability of the elder to remain safely in the community. All reports of elder abuse, including self-neglect, should be made to the appropriate local Protective Services agency. After hours reports are made to the Elder Abuse hotline at 1-800-922-2275. A written report is required within 48 hours of a verbal report. For more information about this change, or the elder abuse mandated reporting requirements, please contact your local Elder Protective Services Agency. If you do not know your local Elder Protective Services Agency, go to www.800ageinfo.com or call 1-800-AGE-INFO.
