Statewide Antibiogram Data

The Epidemiology Program within the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) has been collecting acute-care hospital antibiograms since 1999. Antibiograms are aggregate reports typically created on an annual or bi-annual basis by microbiology laboratories in order to understand antibiotic susceptibility rates among patients in their facility. The aggregated data in the report represents clinical isolates (cultures of bacteria) tested in the microbiology laboratory for antibiotic susceptibilities. The antibiotic susceptibility rates are calculated by dividing the total number of susceptible isolates by the total number of isolates tested for specific bacteria/antibiotic combinations.

Acute-care hospitals in Massachusetts have been required to report their antibiograms since 2013 using an electronic submission process. Data obtained from this process are analyzed by MDPH to generate statewide and hospital-specific reports, which are not publicly available at this time. The statewide report shows the average percent susceptibility of bacterial pathogens of interest to relevant antibiotics.
