Although most legislation in Massachusetts limiting youth access to tobacco products and providing protection from secondhand smoke is passed and enforced at the local level, the following Massachusetts General Laws apply to all communities in Massachusetts:
Local ordinances are enacted through local community efforts guided by MTCP-funded local boards of health and board of health coalitions. Many of the cities/towns in Massachusetts have passed tobacco-related provisions. These provisions fall into two broad categories:
- Restricting youth access to tobacco
- Restricting public exposure to environmental tobacco smoke
Please note: while some of the regulations affecting youth access to tobacco and exposure to secondhand smoke are enacted and enforced locally, statewide provisions are also in effect.
This information is provided by the Massachusetts Tobacco Control Program within the Department of Public Health.
