Programs Offered
Patient Populations Served
Tewksbury Hospital provides for acute and chronic hospital levels of care for medical patients; and acute and intermediate hospital levels of care for psychiatric patients. In addition, both Medical Service and Psychiatric Service patients receive services at the extended care level.
Medical Patients
In general the Medical Service population is diagnosed with a chronic disease and often has multiple co-morbid conditions requiring intense Nursing and Rehab services for neurological and neuro-behavioral conditions. Acute episodes of illness are treated at Tewksbury Hospital. In cases where a specific treatment is not available at Tewksbury Hospital, patients are transferred to the appropriate care provider and setting, consistent with the preference of the patient.Specialized services at Tewksbury Hospital include the following:
- Huntington's Disease - short term and long term inpatient services are provided to patients who present at various stages of this progressive debilitating neurological disorder.
- HIV/AIDS - An interdisciplinary staff including an Infectious Disease Physician Consultant provides services to HIV/AIDS patients at varying stages of illness. History of Substance Abuse is often a secondary diagnosis.
- Neurological Rehabilitation - A dedicated unit that features a living-skills room which assists patients to relearn essential daily functions; an active skilled rehabilitation program; and special adaptive equipment to support the functional challenges of brain injury.
- Psychiatric Patients
The Psychiatric Units evaluate and treat adults, aged nineteen and over, with serious mental illness that requires the security of a locked unit. Patients fall into two broad categories: civil and forensic treatment status. Patients are referred from acute care psychiatric facilities or from other DMH facilities for intermediate care under the provisions of Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 123.
Clinical Services Provided
Tewksbury Hospital offers a broad range of services including a physician on site at all times, around-the-clock nursing care, rehabilitation services including physical therapy, occupational therapy, and speech therapy, psychology services, social services, and an on-site dialysis clinic.
