The Massachusetts Commission for the Blind’s (MCB) Volunteer Program provides volunteers for MCB consumers (clients) who are legally blind across the Commonwealth. Hundreds of MCB consumers are waiting to be matched with a volunteer from their community. MCB needs volunteers in all of the cities and towns throughout Massachusetts.

As a MCB Volunteer, no special skills are required. Volunteers are matched up on a one-on-one basis with one of our consumers who are blind. A volunteer provides services on a regular, recurring basis, primarily in the consumer’s home. They may also help the consumer by reading through their mail and household paperwork, and assisting with checkbook entries. MCB Volunteers could work together on a weekly grocery shopping trip, providing transportation and assistance throughout the store. Some volunteers are friendly visitors, providing companionship and socialization via phone calls or visits to consumers who are isolated. Volunteers tell us which of these tasks they are willing to help with. We will match them up according to where they want to do their volunteer work (close to home, school or work), and where there is someone waiting. If volunteers take public transportation we can match them accordingly.

MCB requires volunteers to be at least 18 years of age, or accompanied by a parent or guardian. Volunteers will also need to attend one orientation/training session, where we talk with them about facts and myths concerning blindness, share experience and stories about doing this kind of volunteer work and teach them how to be a sighted guide so that they will feel more comfortable walking with a person who is blind. In addition to filling out a short volunteer application, a CORI check and three personal/professional references are required.

MCB’s Volunteer Program offers a lot of flexibility. Volunteers can do their volunteer work during the day or evening, weekdays or on the weekend. A typical commitment is one weekly visit for one to two hours. If they prefer to do their volunteer work every two weeks, we can match them with someone who doesn’t need weekly help.

If you or someone you know is interested in volunteering, you can send an email directly to MCBVolunteer@state.ma.us or contact one of our two Volunteer Coordinators: Laurie Korajczyk at 617-626-7575 or Jillian DiBenedetto at 617-626-7493.
