Patrick-Murray Administration Announces Josiane Martinez Appointed Executive Director for State Office for Refugees and Immigrants

Martinez to succeed Richard Chacón at agency dedicated to immigrant issues

BOSTON - The Patrick-Murray Administration today announced the appointment of Josiane Martinez as Executive Director of the Office for Refugees and Immigrants (ORI), effective Monday, August 22. Martinez succeeds Richard Chacón, who left state service in July for a position at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

"I'm very grateful to Richard Chacón for his leadership at the Office for Refugees and Immigrants," said Governor Patrick. "Josiane has worked diligently to make our Government more accessible and open to all people of Massachusetts, and she will serve our diverse immigrant and refugee communities well in this new position. I am confident that under Josiane's direction, Massachusetts will continue to show national leadership in this important arena."

Martinez previously served as Governor Patrick's Director of Specialized Media, where she successfully opened up communications and implemented media campaigns with multicultural and multi-language outlets across the state. From 2004 to 2010, she served as director of marketing and public relations for La Alianza Hispana, an organization that provides family supports and services to Latinos throughout the Greater Boston area. Martinez, a former reporter, has also worked for multiple Latino newspapers and media outlets in Massachusetts and Puerto Rico. Martinez has a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and Public Communication, as well as graduate studies in Communications from the University of Puerto Rico. She is currently completing her MBA at Simmons College.

"Josiane's experience working with immigrant communities as an advocate will be invaluable to her work at ORI," said Secretary of Health and Human Services Dr. JudyAnn Bigby. "Her commitment to engaging communities throughout the Commonwealth will fuel the agency's ability to fully engage refugees and immigrants in the economic and social fabric of the Commonwealth."

"I am honored by Secretary Bigby's appointment and promise to build on the demonstrated commitment of Governor Patrick to promote the full participation of refugees and immigrants in the Commonwealth," said Martinez. "I am fortunate to follow Richard Chacón, and will benefit from his mentorship in taking on this responsibility."

The Office for Refugees and Immigrants promotes the full participation of refugees and immigrants as self-sufficient individuals and families in the economic, social and civic life of Massachusetts. ORI works with community-based organizations and other state agencies to provide a range of services to refugees, asylees, immigrants and other non-citizen residents.
