Mass. Mentorship Educational Interpreter Program

Overview of the Program

The Massachusetts Educational Interpreter Mentoring Project has been established as a result of the realization of the need for qualified educational interpreting services for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students in the state of Massachusetts. Many educational interpreters located throughout the state work in isolation and need additional resources to help improve the services they provide to the school systems that employ them. This mentorship project will take place in the five regions of the state. Participants of the program are educational interpreters who will have both a hearing and Deaf mentor assigned to them.

It is the goal of this project that the self-confidence, respect and skills of all educational interpreters be enhanced and the quality of their services improved. In addition, the participants will have the opportunity to set professional goals that will prepare them for the EIPA that the state plans to set as a requirement for all educational interpreters, in the future.

Mentors have been trained on how to be an effective mentor, the art of productive feedback, and explanation of the Gish model and Vygotsky. We will employ input from other Deaf participants from the community as well. Resources packet and materials will be distributed to all mentors. Mentors will use the Vygotsky approach assessing interpreting samples, action plan and short-term goals of each mentee. Mentors will be paired with mentees, matching goals of mentees to strengths of mentors.

Limit 15 participants, for an application contact me, Diane Stains at d.stains@att.net or by telephone at 774-930-4024.

Educational Interpreter Registry

The Educational Interpreter Registry is a database of interpreters who are qualified to work in educational settings in Massachusetts. This database is maintained by the Massachusetts Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (MCDHH).

Who Needs to Register?

Any staff members providing educational interpreting for students who are deaf or hard of hearing in schools, including private special education schools or collaborative schools, must be registered through the MCDHH.

This includes personnel who may not be identified as interpreters but who provide sign language support services in an educational setting, including paraprofessionals, signing aides, tutors, language or communication facilitators, and others.

To register with MCDHH, please go to www.mass.gov/mcdhh and follow the link for "Educational Interpreter Registration," or contact Diane Stains at 774-930-4024 or d.stains@att.net
