All Provider Bulletin 135 (June 2004) (PDF) pdf format of all-135.pdf
rtf format of all-135.rtf file size 3MB announced the implementation of a new financial management system called NewMMARS (New Massachusetts Management and Accounting Reporting System) for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, effective July 1, 2004. In addition to the issues previously identified in that bulletin, there are other transitional issues affecting providers.

The following information is for providers who receive the electronic 835-payment/remittance-transaction.

  • When a provider has multiple pay-to provider numbers associated with one tax identification number (TIN) and receives payment via EFT, the BPR Financial Information segment will indicate Notification Only (BPR01=H) and Non-PaymentData (BPR04=NON) because the EFT information does not equal the Total Payment Amount of the 835 (BPR02). The Check/EFT Date (BPR16) will be the 835 production date and the Check/EFT Number (TRN02) will be the 835 transaction set control number.

  • We are working with the Office of the State Comptroller to resolve these issues. We will provide you with updated information as it becomes available and apologize for any inconvenience that this may cause.

  • If you have additional questions concerning the 835-transaction, please contact MassHealth Customer Service by e-mail at or by telephone at 1-800-841-2900.
