Two Arrests in Athol Fire
State Fire Marshal Stephen D. Coan, Athol Fire Chief Thomas V. Lozier and Athol Police Chief Timothy Anderson announced the arrest tonight of two youths for setting the January 23, 2013 fire at 147 High Street in Athol. Kevin Thibodeau, age 19, of Athol, and Bryant Dufresne, 19, of Leominster were arrested tonight and charged with burning of a dwelling, breaking and entering daytime with intent to commit a felony, malicious damage over $250, and causing injury to a firefighter. They will be arraigned tomorrow in Orange District Court. Dufresne is being held in lieu of $200K cash bail and Thibodeau is being held in lieu of $200K cash bail.
Athol Fire Chief Lozier said, “Although this fire appears to be an isolated arson incident, it does not remove the anxiety that a community feels when fires are deliberately set. This was a tremendous effort by the fire investigation team.”
The fire was jointly investigated by the Athol Fire and Police Departments and State Police assigned to the Office of the State Fire Marshal. All additional inquiries should be addressed to the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office that will be prosecuting the case.
