November 29, 2016 - Woodstove Ignited Clothing of Elderly Charlton Man

State Fire Marshal Peter J. Ostroskey, Worcester District Attorney Joseph Early Jr., Charlton Fire Chief Charles E. Cloutier and Charlton Police Chief James A. Pervier said that 91-year old Armand St. Laurent died from a burn injury suffered in his woodworking shed on Wednesday, November 23, 2016. His clothing caught fire from a woodstove he used inside the shed behind his home at 168 Berry Corner Road in Charlton. There was little damage to the shed itself.

The fire and burn injury were jointly investigated by the Charlton Fire and Police Departments and State Police assigned to both the Office of the State Fire Marshal and to the Office of Worcester District Attorney Joseph Early Jr.

Mr. St. Laurent was the 48th fire death so far this year in Massachusetts. Over a quarter have been seniors over the age of 65.

“This was a tragic loss to the family made more painful happening just before Thanksgiving,” said State Fire Marshal Peter J. Ostroskey.
