Spontaneous Combustion Caused Fire at Weymouth Flooring Company
State Fire Marshal Peter J. Ostroskey and Weymouth Fire Chief Keith Stark announced the cause of yesterday evening’s fire at the Damien Hardwood Company was spontaneous combustion. The fire started inside a vacuum that was inside a company van parked underneath a canopy at 254 Washington Street. The fire spread to a garage then to the commercial structure housing the offices of Damien Hardwood and The Heavenly Spa, and then to a neighboring house at 258 Washington Street.
The vacuum had been used that day with a floor finishing product that has self-heating properties. Workers had removed the disposable bag from the vacuum and placed it in a dumpster. Examination of a similar vacuum showed remnants of sanding swarf remained inside. Workers had recently put out a small similar fire in a vacuum.
The fire was jointly investigated by the Weymouth Fire Department and State Police assigned to the Office of the State Fire Marshal.
