October 4 - 10 is Fire Prevention Week. No one thinks fire will ever happen to them. This year's theme 'Stay Fire Smart! Don't Get Burned', is a good reminder for people to be more aware of the danger of fire that surrounds us. Fire is a devastating experience and we want all residents of Massachusetts to 'Stay Fire Smart' throughout the year. According to data from the Massachusetts Fire Incident Reporting System (MFIRS), there were 30,136 fires reported in Massachusetts during 2008 causing 49 civilian deaths, one firefighter death, 337 civilian injuries, 622 firefighter injuries and an estimated $254 million in property damage. Each year countless lives are changed and millions of dollars are lost due to fire. Fire is a serious public safety concern both locally and nationally, and we in the Massachusetts fire service are committed to ensuring the safety of everyone living in and visiting our state.
