September – Campus Fire Safety Month

Massachusetts welcomes many college students each fall to on and off-campus housing. Please make working smoke and CO alarms and a new escape plan for the new digs part of your move-in to-do list.

September 11, 2014 - Observances
There will be observances of the losses suffered in the September 11 attacks throughout the Commonwealth. At 6 p.m.

At 6 p.m. (rain or shine) a remembrance ceremony will take place at the State House’s Fallen Firefighters Memorial in Ashburton Park. The procession of uniformed firefighters, bagpipers and honor guards, will depart at 5:30 p.m. from the Boston Common at the corner of Beacon and Charles Streets.

September 19, 2014 - Recruit Class #217 Graduation
The graduation ceremony for Recruit Class #217 will take place on September 19, 2014, at 1:30 p.m. at the Department of Fire Services, 1 State Road, Stow, MA.

September 12-28, 2014 – Fire Safety at the “Big E”
From September 12-28, 2014, the Western Mass. Safety and Fire Educators (Western MA SAFE) will be staffing a booth in the Massachusetts Building at the 17-day agricultural fair know as “The Big E” in West Springfield. The Department of Fire Services will be supporting this effort. Massachusetts Day is September 18. 

September 17- 19, 2014 – 21st annual Hazardous Materials Training Conference
The 23rd annual Hazardous Materials Training Conference will take place September 17-19, 2014 at the Radisson Hotel Plymouth Harbor. It is sponsored by the Mass. Assoc. of Hazardous Materials Technicians in partnership with the U.S. EPA Region 1, the DFS Hazardous Materials Response Program, the Mass. Emergency Management Agency, the state Department of Environmental Protection and Smith Detection.

September 22, 2014
On September 22, 2014, (10 a.m. – 3 p.m.), DFS will host the first of this fall’s Senior Fire Officer Forums, NFPA Standards in Action presented by Ken Willette, manager of the Public Fire Protection Division of NFPA. National Fire Protection Association standards impact virtually every aspect of fire service operations, yet many fire service professionals have limited understanding of how these standards are at work every day, on every run, to provide for their safety and wellness. Fee is $13 and includes lunch. Pre-registration required using standard MFA application.

September 29-30, 2014 – 20th annual MA Public Fire and Life Safety Education Conference
The 20th annual MA Public Fire and Life Safety Education Conference will be held September 29-30, 2014 at the Westford Regency Inn and Conference Center. The 2014 Fire and Life Safety Educator of the Year Award will be presented at the conference on September 30, 2014.

October 5-11, 2014 – Fire Prevention Week
National Fire Prevention Week will be celebrated on the week of October 6-12 in 2014. This year’s theme is “Working Smoke Alarms Save Lives: Test Yours Every Month!” For more information on local events, visit www.firepreventionweek.org.

October 6, 2014 – Groundbreaking at DFS – Springfield Campus
The Department of Fire Services, Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno and the western Mass. fire chiefs will be holding an official groundbreaking ceremony at the new Department of Fire Services – Springfield Campus at 2:15 p.m.. It is located at 100 Grochmal Avenue, the site of the former Springfield Fire Training Center.

October 10, 2014 – Recruit Class #218 Graduation
The graduation ceremony for Recruit Class #218 will take place on October 10, 2014, at 1:30 p.m. at the Department of Fire Services, 1 State Road, Stow, MA.

October 28, 2014 – 25th Firefighter of the Year Heroic Awards
Governor Deval Patrick will present the 25th annual Firefighter of the Year Heroic Awards on October 28, 2014.

October 28-29, 2014 – Arson Investigation and Prosecution Conference
On October 28-29, 2014, the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office and NoFIRES, the Northwestern Juvenile Fire
Intervention, Response, Education and Safety Partnership, will host a 2-day conference on Arson Investigation and
Prosecution, at the Log Cabin located at 500 Easthampton Road, Holyoke MA, 01040.

October 31, 2014 – Recruit Class #219 Graduation
The graduation ceremony for Recruit Class #219 will take place on October 10, 2014, at 1:30 p.m. at the Department of Fire Services, 1 State Road, Stow, MA.

October 31, 2014 – Halloween Fire Safety
State Fire Marshal Coan urges everyone to practice fire safety around Halloween, a holiday that traditionally involves using candles, and offers safety tips.

November 2, 2014 – Change Your Clock, Change Your Battery
On November 2, 2014, remember when you change your clock to change the alkaline batteries in your smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms. Some come with 10-year lithium batteries that do not need changing.

The second Monday in December has been established as Candle Safety Day by MGL C.6: S.12XX to promote the safe use
of candles in the Commonwealth and recommending that this day be observed in an appropriate manner by the people.
