March 13, 2016- Change Your Clock, Change Your Battery

March 20-26, 2016 - Poison and Inhalant Abuse Prevention Week 
March 20-26, 2016 is Poison and Inhalant Abuse Prevention Week. Firefighters respond to all types of poisonings from carbon monoxide poisoning, accidental and intentional overdoses, children accessing medicines and household chemicals and youth who abuse inhalants. Many substances involved in inhalant abuse  are also major fire hazards. Nearly 40% of those who die from inhalant abuse were first time users. On March 24, 2016, a 2-part Senior Fire Officer Forum on Fire & Emergency Services, Ethics, the Future and Professional Development will be offered at the Department of Fire Services in Stow. The first part of this Senior Fire Officer Forum will identify four major steps that lead to ethical lapses and the steps leaders can take to avoid them. The second part will help leaders learn to look for important information and how they can use it to plan for the future of fire and emergency services in their own communities. Course Fee: $20.00. April 2, 2016 Senior Fire Officer Forum: Understanding ISOs Fire Suppression Rating Schedule
Tony Zampella, ISO Manager for Community Hazard Mitigation, will present a Senior Fire Officer Forum Understanding ISOs Fire Suppression Rating Schedule on April 2, 106 at the DFS Springfield Campus. Lowering your ISO rating can result in fire insurance reductions for the properties served by your fire department. In addition, the classification may be a resource that is used by communities for budgeting and economic development. This class will provide an overview on how the Fire Suppression Rating Schedule is used to classify your fire protection delivery system, and highlight the tools and data that are available to communities. Battallion Chief Robert Lipscomb, Lynchburg (VA) Fire Department and Chief Tim Pellerin, Rangely (ME) Fire Department will present insight, actions, and lessons learned from an incident commander’s perspective when responding to a rail incident involving derailment and a flammable commodity.
