September 11, 2016 – Observances
There will be observances of the losses suffered in the September 11 attacks throughout the Commonwealth. DFS invites students, staff and our neighbors to join us in a remembrance ceremony at 9:55 a.m. Please arrive by 9:45 a.m. Class B uniform for fire department members.
September 11, 2016 – Fallen Firefighter Memorial Ceremony
The annual Fallen Firefighter Memorial Ceremony will be held at 3 p.m. at the site of the memorial, Ashburton Park, State House grounds.
September 12, 2016 - Senior Fire Officer Forum: “Step Up” Leadership and Team Building
Deputy Fire Chief Frank Viscuso, Kearney (NJ) Fire Department will present a Senior Fire Officer Forum “Step Up” Leadership and Team Building on September 12 at the Department of Fire Services in Stow. This seminar will cover important leadership skills and team building strategies for senior officers. Course Fee: $20.00. Check or money order made out to "MFA Trust Fund." Please note: Applications must include payment. Walk-ins will not be allowed. Lunch will be provided. Pre-registration is required using the standard MFA application . Deadline to register is Aug. 29.
September 14-15, 2016 – NFA Course: NFA course Decision Making for Initial Company Operations
MFA is offering the National Fire Academy (NFA) course Decision Making for Initial Company Operations on September 14-15, 2016. The decisions of first arriving officers will have an impact throughout the entire incident. Learn to make good decisions that will have a positive impact on the outcome.
September 16-October 2, 2016 – Fire Safety at the “Big E”
From September 16 – October 2, 2016, the Western Mass. Safety and Fire Educators (Western MA SAFE) will be staffing a booth in the Massachusetts Building at the 17-day agricultural fair know as “The Big E” in West Springfield. The Department of Fire Services will be supporting this effort.
September 21-23, 2016 – 25th annual Hazardous Materials Training Conference
The 25th annual Hazardous Materials Training Conference will take place September 21-23, 2016 at the Hotel 1620 at Plymouth. It is sponsored by the Mass. Assoc. of Hazardous Materials Technicians (MAHMT).
September 26-27, 2016 – 22nd annual MA Fire and Life Safety Education Conference
The 22nd annual MA Fire and Life Safety Education Conference will be held September 26-27, 2016 at the Westford Regency Inn and Conference Center. The conference will offer 26 workshops, a 4-hour Leadership in Public Education track and four general sessions to keep educators moving towards our destination and theme: Keeping Everybody Safe Every Day. Nominations are now being accepted for the 2016 Fire and Life Safety Educator of the Year Award which will be presented at the conference.
September 30 – October 10
The Topsfield Fair, the oldest agricultural fair in the U.S. will begin at 1:00 P.M. on September 30 and run until October 10 at 11:00 P.M. Local departments and DFS staff will be manning a booth during the fair.

October 17, 2016 - Senior Fire Officer Forum: Top 20 Tactical Considerations from UL & NIST Firefighter Safety Research
The Senior Fire Officer Forum on the Top 20 Tactical Considerations from UL & NIST Firefighter Safety Research will be presented on October 17 by Chief Peter Van Dorpe of the Algonquin-Lake in the Hills Fire Protection District, IL, at the Department of Fire Services in Stow. He will lead a guided discussion on how firefighters may best implement the principles and concepts arising from recent UL & NIST firefighter safety research on the fire ground. Course Fee: $20.00.
