The Division of Fire Safety maintains the Massachusetts Fire Incident Reporting System (MFIRS) and the Massachusetts Burn Injury Reporting System (M-BIRS). By analyzing this data, we can see what causes fires and burns, determine if problems are getting better or worse and develop appropriate prevention plans. The unit also works cooperatively with the Massachusetts State Police Mass. Burned/Recovered Motor Vehicle Reporting Law. Staff also assists fire departments analyze their own fire data.
Fire departments must report any fire or explosion resulting in a dollar loss or human casualty to the Division of Fire Safety by law. Fire departments are encouraged to report all of their incidents.
The data on the fire incident report can be analyzed in a wide variety of ways. Each year a fact sheet is produced summarizing the fire and fire death experience in Massachusetts. The office also publishes an annual report of the Massachusetts Fire Incident Reporting System, which is used to answer statistical questions about fire.
By law, health care providers must report burns covering 5% or more of a person's body surface to the State Fire Marshal. This is a tool to catch arsonists who may burn themselves while lighting a fire and then attempt to avoid detection by seeking medical treatment at a distance from the crime scene. It is also a powerful database for burn prevention. Each year the burn injury data is analyzed to produce an annual statistical report which is shared with hospitals and injury prevention professionals.
