Re:527 CMR 10.09(5) Student Work/Teaching Materials in Schools

Attached is the revised 527 CMR 10.09(5), an amendment to the regulation passed earlier this summer regarding paper decorations, artwork, student work and teaching material hangings in Educational Use occupancies. This amendment provides clarification, guidance, and a consensus approach to the amount of and location of materials in classrooms, egress corridors, and school assembly areas.

As the point of contact for local schools regarding fire safety, fire departments must first be familiar with this new amendment and all the changes that will result. In order to have fire officials become well-informed on these changes, the Department of Fire Services has scheduled three classes to provide information to the local fire departments. The training schedule is attached to this document. To register for one of these classes please forward a completed MFA registration form pdf format of Download MFA Registration Form
to the Massachusetts Firefighting Academy or complete an on-line registration form at

A separate mailing will be sent to all the Superintendents of schools in the Commonwealth inviting them to this training as well. We encourage you to reach out to your local superintendent or a representative to attend in conjunction with the fire department.

This training will focus on the need to educate school officials in understanding why this regulation has been promulgated, ways to keep a creative learning environment while complying with the intent of the regulation and ensuring a safe environment in all schools.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the Technical Services Unit or Code Compliance and Enforcement Unit at 978-567-3300 or at our Western MA office at 413-587-3181.
