The Department of Fire Services is the sole agency within state government responsible for overall coordination of fire service policy and operations. By statute, the State Fire Marshal is the head of the department which consists of the following divisions:
- Massachusetts Firefighting Academy
Provides all fire training to the firefighters of the cities, towns, and fire districts. - Massachusetts Fire Training Council
Handles the certification of firefighters. - Division of Fire Safety
Provides public education, regulation, code enforcement and technical assistance to fire departments, the public, and regulated trades and industries. Its governing body is the Massachusetts Fire Service Commission. - Hazardous Materials Response
Oversees the operation of the Hazardous Materials Response Teams throughout the state and has as its governing body the Hazardous Materials Mitigation and Response Advisory Board . - Administrative Services
Manages budgetary & procurement, personnel, and facilities issues for all DFS divisions. - Fire and Explosion Investigation Section
Has specially trained State Police assigned to the Office of the State Fire Marshal with two units: the State Police Bomb Squad and the Fire Investigation Unit.

Provides ready access to legal counsel to all divisions. - Public Information Office
Handles media inquiries and publicizes agency programs and activities.
