The MFA is a division of the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services (DFS). Since 1966, the MFA has provided appropriate fire service training to personnel of the cities, towns, and fire districts of the Commonwealth at no cost. With the exception of several large city departments, all entry-level career firefighters attend the recruit firefighter training program conducted at the MFA. Upon successful completion of the recruit program, all students have met the requirements of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Standard for Fire Fighter Professional Qualifications (1001). Each student is administered a written exam for both Firefighter I/II (FF I/II) and Hazardous Materials/Operations Level Responder (OLR). A passing grade on each exam affords the student a FF I/II and OLR level of certification from the Massachusetts Fire Training Council (MFTC). Additionally, certifications awarded by the MFA are nationally recognized through affiliation with the ProBoard, a national fire service certification agency.
