Message from Colonel Robbins

On Thursday, March 30, 2006 the Department received the Academy Review Commission's Report pdf format of academy_commission_report_march_2006.pdf that was initiated in the fall of 2005. As a result of events that occurred at the Academy during the 78 th R.T.T, I felt it was important to do a thorough review of the Academy's training policies and practices. I established a nine member Commission to do a top to bottom review of our selection, screening, training and education of recruits. I felt it was important to have a group of highly educated individuals from diverse backgrounds to undertake a neutral review of our Academy.

I met with the Commission several times over these past few months. I began implementing changes based on the feedback from the Commission, prior to the final report being released to the Department. The Division of Standards and Training have done an outstanding job preparing for the arrival of the 79 th Recruit Training Troop, which began the Academy on Monday, April 3, 2006. We have increased the number of Drill Instructors assigned to the Academy and increased their training from 2-3 weeks to 6 weeks. We have established a Recruit Liaison Officer position at the Academy to work with trainees on a personal level. The report also contained important feedback information from prior recruits and Field Training Officers. As a result of this information, the Academy has established a mock barracks to assist recruits in the proper use of the radio/communication system, desk duties and report writing. The report also gave glowing praise to the Academy Medical Unit and the medical care provided to our recruits. The Department will make every attempt to implement the changes that were recommended by the Commission.
