Blue Mass

On Sunday, May 7, 2006 at 10:00 a.m., members of the Massachusetts State Police attended the Annual Blue Mass held at St. Paul's Cathedral in Worcester, MA. The Blue Mass is a memorial service held annually to honor officers who have passed away and to recognize the efforts of those who have made a significant contribution to the field of law enforcement.

The Blue Mass, which was organized by Bishop Robert J. McManus and sponsored by the Diocese of Worcester and Anna Maria College, drew a large attendance including many officials from state and local law enforcement agencies. The ceremony began at Bishop Flanagan Park where a memorial service was held in honor of Sergeant Kathleen Barrett and Trooper Vincent Cila of the Massachusetts State Police, Chief William J. Colleary Jr. of the Southborough Police Department and Lieutenant Anthony DiGirolamo of the Milford Police Department.

Back at Saint Paul's Cathedral, the service focused on remembering fallen and deceased members of the law enforcement community, praying for those who are sick and recognizing those who have made a significant contribution to the field. Major Marian McGovern of the Massachusetts State Police and Chief Thomas J. Melia of the Northbridge Police Department were presented with the "Distinguished Law Enforcement Award," in appreciation for their hard work and dedication in the field of law enforcement.
