On Tuesday, February 27, 2007, Mother's Against Drunk Driving (MADD) held their annual MADD Drive for Life Awards breakfast honoring numerous state and local police officers for their commitment in keeping the roads of the Commonwealth safe. The Drive for Life Award recognizes law enforcement officers committed to Operating Under the Influence (OUI) enforcement and stopping impaired operators. Colonel Mark F. Also on hand was the Massachusetts State Police Breath Alcohol Testing Mobile, better known as the BAT Mobile. The BAT Mobile was recently dedicated to Trooper Ellen E. Englehart who received life-altering injuries sustained in a crash involving an impaired operator while she was in performance of her duties. Since it's first deployment on July 1, 2006, the Massachusetts State Police, in cooperation with the local police, have conducted thirty-three (33) OUI checkpoints with the BAT Mobile being involved in twenty (20) of those checkpoints. These checkpoints have been conducted in twenty-six (26) different communities throughout the Commonwealth and have netted the state police 172 OUI arrests. The department strongly believes our strategy of joint state and local sobriety checkpoints is working, and we will increase the number of these checkpoints again in 2007. To assist in this initiative, Colonel Delaney was pleased to announce that the Governor's Highway Safety Bureau has awarded the Department a second BAT Mobile, which will be delivered later this year. This additional BAT Mobile will allow us to further the goal of the Massachusetts State Police to ensure the Commonwealth's roadways are the safest in the nation.
