State Police Respond to Fatal Crash on Route 93 in Andover

On Saturday, September 30, 2006, at about 7:05 p.m., State Police from the Andover Barracks responded to a two-vehicle crash on Route 93 South, south of Exit 42, in Andover.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper Michael Miskell and Trooper Carlo Mastromettei indicates that a 2006 Ford Escape was traveling in the middle lane of Route 93 South and that a 2003 Mercury Grand Marquis was traveling in the left lane of Route 93 South. The Mercury veered to its right crossing over the lane divider and made contact with the Ford. Both vehicles traveled off the roadway to the right: the Mercury came to final rest on the right-side shoulder; the Ford rolled over off of the right-side shoulder. The operator of the Ford, Michael A Struffolino, age 50, of Haverhill, was ejected; he sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. The Ford's passenger, Merle H. Webber, age 48, of Haverhill, was transported with serious injuries by ambulance to Lawrence General Hospital. The operator of Mercury, Hans Maitre, age 61, of Brookline, was uninjured in the crash.

While the crash remains under investigation with the assistance of the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, it appears that the Mercury's speed may have been a factor in the crash. It also appears that the occupants of the Ford were not wearing safety belts at the time of the crash. The State Police Crime Scene Services Section, the Massachusetts Highway Department, the Andover Fire Department and the Andover Police Department assisted troopers at the scene. Route 93 South was shut down for about one and a half hours.

This is all the information available for public disclosure at this time. Please do not contact the barracks directly for information.
