State Police Respond to Bus Crash on Ramp from Route 290 East to Route 12 in Auburn
Preliminary investigation by Trooper Jeffrey Gilbert indicates that a 2001 Van-Hool passenger bus was attempting to exit Route 290 East at Exit 7 when it rolled off the ramp coming to final rest on its left-side in the grassy area on the left-side of the ramp. The Fung Wah Bus Transportation bus was being operated by Chuandai Chen, age 44, of Brooklyn, New York. There were 57 passengers on the bus at the time of the crash; 34 of the passengers were taken to Worcester area hospitals for treatment of minor injuries.
This crash remains under further investigation. However, excessive speed appears to have been a factor in the crash and the driver of the bus, Chuandai Chen has been cited for traveling at a speed greater than reasonable and proper. Additionally, following the crash, a second Fung Wah bus driver and bus were sent to the crash scene for transportation of the passengers to Boston. This second Fung Wah driver was put "Out of Service" by the State Police for violations of two Federal regulations: having a false log book and failing to speak English. Appropriate arrangements were ultimately made to transport the passengers to Boston.
The State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, the State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Section, the State Police Crime Scene Services Section, the Massachusetts Department of Telecommunication & Energy, the U.S. Department of Transportation, the Auburn Fire Department and the Oxford Fire Department assisted troopers at the scene.
