State Police Respond to a Fatal Crash on Route 24 in Avon
Preliminary investigation by Trooper James Morris indicates that 21-year-old Adam J. Berry of Easton was traveling on Route 24 South in the area of Harrison Boulevard in a 1994 Jeep Wrangler in the center lane. He lost control of the vehicle, traveled into the breakdown lane and struck the guardrail on the right shoulder of the roadway. The vehicle then traveled back across all lanes, entered the median and rolled over. Berry was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash, but was ejected form the vehicle when it rolled over.
Berry was transported by ambulance to Boston Medical Center where he was subsequently pronounced dead. His passenger, 21-year-old Thomas P. Murphy of Easton, who was also belted at the time of the crash, was transported by ambulance to Good Samaritan/Caritas Hospital in Brockton for treatment of serious injuries.
Although the cause of this crash remains under investigation with the assistance of the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, investigators believe that alcohol may have been a factor. The State Police Crime Scene Services Section, the Massachusetts Highway Department, the Stoughton Fire Department and the Avon Fire department assisted troopers at the scene.
The two left lanes of Route 24 southbound were closed for approximately two hours due to the investigation.
No further information is currently available for disclosure. Please do not contact the barracks directly for media inquiries.
