State Police Investigate Route 20 Charlton Crash

Today, December 2, 2006 at about 3:15 p.m., State Police from the Sturbridge Barracks responded to a two vehicle crash on Route 20 at Route 169 in Charlton.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper Eric Benson indicates that 52-year-old Juan Colon of Southbridge was traveling on Route 20 West in a 1998 Nissan Frontier pickup truck. He initiated a left turn onto Route 169 and his vehicle was then struck head-on by a 2001 Toyota Corolla, which was traveling eastbound on Route 20.

Colon and two passengers in the Toyota, 66-year-old Lawrence Medeiros of East Providence, RI, and 53-year-old Jose Pacheco, were all transported by ambulance to Harrington Memorial Hospital for treatment of serious injuries. The driver of the Toyota, 44-year-old Alexandre Amorim of East Providence, RI, was transported by ambulance to Harrington Memorial Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. Medeiros and Pacheco were subsequently transported to UMass Medical Center for treatment.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. No charges have been filed at this time. Charlton Police, Fire and EMS assisted at the scene.

Route 20 was completely closed for about 15 minutes.
