State Police Respond to Fatal Crash on Route 1 South in Chelsea

Today, at about 4:15 p.m., State Police from the Revere Barracks responded to a two vehicle fatal crash on Route 1 South, just south of Fifth Street in Chelsea.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper Michael Tulipano, indicates that a 1994 Toyota Camry sedan operated by 50 year-old Stephen M. Parnell of Nashua, NH, was traveling southbound on Route 1 when it struck a vehicle just prior to the toll booths on the Tobin Bridge. Parnell then reversed direction and was traveling north in the southbound lanes of Route 1. Parnell struck a 2005 Honda Accord sedan operated by 57 year-old Michael A. Devin of Milton, head on, just south of Fifth Street in Chelsea. Both operators, Parnell and Devin were taken by ambulance to Mass. General Hospital with serious injuries. Both Parnell and Devin were later pronounced deceased at the hospital. A passenger in the Honda, 50 year-old Ann Condon of Milton was also taken to Mass. General Hospital with serious injuries.

The cause of this crash remains under investigation with the assistance of the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section. Route 1 South in Chelsea was shut down for 3 hours during the crash investigation.

Chelsea Fire and EMS, State Police Crime Scene Services Section and MassHighways all assisted troopers at the scene.
