State Police Arrest One in Worcester Following CT Pursuit

On December 16, 2006, at about 7:00 p.m., State Police arrested a Connecticut man following a pursuit that started in Putnam, Connecticut, and ended on the Grafton Street Ramp (exit 14), off of Route 290 East in Worcester.

Preliminary investigation indicates that Connecticut State Police attempted to stop a 1978 Mazda M3 in Putnam, Connecticut, when the operator refused to pull over. A pursuit ensued with the suspect vehicle entering Massachusetts on Route 395 North. Webster Police and Oxford Police took over the pursuit as the vehicle traveled off Route 395 at exit 5, before traveling back onto Route 395 North. State Police patrols then took over the pursuit. As the vehicle continued north, Auburn Police successfully deployed a tire deflation device, which caused three flat tires on the suspect vehicle. As the suspect continued onto Route 290 East, State Police successfully deployed another tire deflation device in the College Square area, deflating the last remaining tire on the suspect vehicle. The vehicle continued on Route 290 East and exited onto the Grafton Street ramp (exit 14), but crashed on the ramp. During this crash, the vehicle spun around and struck a responding State Police Cruiser. The driver, 28-year-old Henry Blanchard of New London, CT, was taken into custody by Trooper Charles Luise and Trooper Jonathan Nugent and transported to the State Police barracks in Sturbridge for booking.

Blanchard was charged with: Failing to Stop for a Police Officer, Operating Under the Influence of Liquor, Operating to Endanger, Failing to Stay within Marked Lanes and Operating an Unregistered Motor Vehicle. He was held pending bail or his arraignment in Worcester District Court on Monday.
