State Police Investigate Fatal Crash on Route 95 South in Georgetown
The preliminary investigation by Trooper Sean McGarry indicates, 47-year old Robert Vinson of Topsfield, MA was operating a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee on Route 95 south when he lost control of his vehicle and traveled into the woods on the right shoulder of the road. Vinson was transported to Anna Jacques Hospital where he was declared deceased.
Members of the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, the State Police Crime Scene Services Section, the Georgetown Police Department, the Georgetown Fire Department, the Byfield Fire Department and the Massachusetts Highway Department assisted troopers at the scene. The two right travel lanes were closed at the time of the crash, and remained closed for about 2 ½ Hours.
The cause of this crash remains under investigation by members of the State Police and the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section. No further information is currently available. Please do not contact the barracks directly.
While protecting the scene Massachusetts State Police Cruiser # 410 was unoccupied and parked in the second travel lane with its emergency light on. At about 1:29 a.m. a 2002 Ford F150 pick-up operated by Ryan Godfrey, a 28-year old, of 4 Myers Lane in Byfield, MA did collide into the rear of that cruiser. Godfrey then drove away from the crash. Officer Hatch of the Georgetown Police Department eventually stopped Godfrey on the ramp from Route 95 South to Route 133. Tpr. Justin Pledge arrested Godfrey. He was transported to the Newbury Barracks and booked for 1) Operating Under the Influence of Alcohol, 2) Leaving the Scene of a Property Damage Crash, 3) Operating to Endanger, 4) Failure to Stop for Police, 5) Marked Lane Violation and 6) Seatbelt Violation.
