Operation Helping Handcuffs

Operation Helping Handcuffs

On Friday, December 22, 2006, Massachusetts State Troopers assigned to the Bristol County District Attorney's Office and New Bedford Police Detectives distributed over 800 dollars in gifts to three Bristol County families as part of the Massachusetts State Police "Operation Helping Handcuffs" program.

The Troopers and New Bedford Police Detectives entered into a partnership with area businesses to generate donations for this program. The businesses that participated in this collaborative effort included, the Boston Bruins, Dunkin' Donuts, KB Toys, Papa Gino's, Shaw's Supermarkets, Staples, Trucchi Supermarket, Wal-Mart, and a large toy retailer that opted to remain anonymous, who donated over $500.00 in merchandise to the program. The officers made a cash donation which was used to purchase additional items.

Of the families assisted, two were from New Bedford and the third from Seekonk. For privacy reasons, the families will not be identified, but they included a married couple with one child, a single mother with three children (ages eight months to five years old), and a widow with four children (ages five to fifteen years old).

Further, a surplus certified authentic autographed Boston Bruins hockey stick was donated to a youth floor hockey league in Fall River operated by Fall River Police Detective Lawrence Ferreira, which will be raffled to raise money for the participants.

This effort would not have been possible without the assistance of New Bedford Child and Family Services and the business community. Although the intent of the program is to assist families in need during the holidays, equally important, it is aimed to build relationships with those who we serve the remainder of the year.
