State Police Investigate Fatal Crash on Route 140 South in New Bedford

Today, at about 4:15 p.m. State Police responded to a two vehicle fatal crash on Route 140 South, just south of Church Street in New Bedford.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper David Oliveira indicates that 67 year-old John A. Morris of New Bedford, was operating a 1989 Volvo sedan in the right lane of Route 140 North, just south of Church Street in New Bedford when his vehicle swerved to the right into the guard rail and then traveled across the two lanes of Route 140 North into the median. The Volvo then traveled into the left travel lane of Route 140 South and struck a 2005 Ford pickup truck head on. The Ford pickup was operated by 42 year-old John M. Carvalho of New Bedford, who was taken by ambulance to Saint Luke's Hospital with minor injuries. The collision caused the Volvo to rollover onto its side on the highway. Morris suffered serious injuries in the crash and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

This crash remains under investigation with the assistance of the New Bedford Police Department, the New Bedford Fire & EMS, State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, State Police Crime Scene Services Section and State Police Detectives from the Bristol County District Attorneys Office.

Two lanes of Route 140 South were closed for approximately two and one half hours.
