Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony for New State Police Barracks in Dartmouth
The new Barracks replaces the former 3,600-square-feet North Dartmouth barracks which was built as a private residence in the 1920s and was then converted to a barracks in the late 1940s. The new facility has a cell block area - a feature that was lacking in the former barracks. The new barracks also has a community room, a secure interview room, a report writing room, a conference room, separate male/female locker facilities, a fitness area and a prisoner sally port.
"This state of the art facility has been a long time coming and I am very thankful to all the individuals who have advocated tirelessly on behalf of the State Police to bring this project to its completion," stated Colonel Delaney. "I know the men and women of the State Police who work in this facility are also extremely grateful to be working in such a modern facility especially when compared to the old barracks to which they had previously been assigned."
"After years of planning, it is very gratifying to see the troopers assigned to the Dartmouth Barracks working out of this new state-of-the-art facility," said Commissioner Perini of DCAM, the state agency that oversaw the construction of the new facility for the State Police. Commissioner Perini added, "We hope that this modern facility will help the State Police staff meet the enormous daily challenges that come with their jobs."
The new barracks is located next to the ramps from Faunce Corner Road to Route 195. As one of the State's busiest barracks, State Police Dartmouth is responsible for patrolling 60 miles along three major highways: Routes 24, 195 and 140 - which include major thorough fares through the cities of New Bedford and Fall River. SP Dartmouth also provides nearly 50 miles of secondary coverage for communities along the South Coast.
Colonel Delaney would like to thank Governor Romney for his commitment to enhancing the law enforcement capabilities of the State Police which in turn enhances the public safety of the citizens of the Commonwealth. The Colonel would also like to thank all the members of the Governor's Office, the Executive Office of Public Safety, the Division of Capital Asset Management and the Department of State Police, and the elected officials from the South Coast, whose efforts were instrumental in bringing to fruition the goal of erecting a new State Police Barracks in Dartmouth.
