State Police investigate a Double Fatal Crash on Route 202 in Phillipston

Today, at about 3:31 p.m. State Police personnel assigned to the Athol Barracks responded to a one-car crash on Route 202 at Route 2 in Phillipston that resulted in two fatalities.

The preliminary investigation by Trooper Frank Parillo indicates Jill Gaskell, a 44 Year-old female from Athol, MA was operating a 1996 Ford Taurus on Route 2 westbound when she lost control and traveled off the left shoulder of the roadway. The vehicle dropped off the overpass down onto Route 202, and rolled over. The vehicle came to rest upright on Route 202. At some point during the crash, a 17 year old juvenile female was ejected from the vehicle and sustained fatal injuries. The female operator also sustained fatal injuries. A 2 month old juvenile male was transported from the scene to Athol Memorial Hospital by the Phillipston Fire Department.

Members of the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, the State Police Crime Scene Services Section, the Phillipston Police Department, the Phillipston Fire Department, and the Massachusetts Highway Department assisted troopers at the scene. Route 202 was closed at the time of the crash for approximately 4 Hours.

The cause of this crash remains under investigation by members of the State Police and the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section. The names of the victims are currently being withheld pending proper notifications. No further information is currently available. Please do not contact the barracks directly.
