State Police Investigate Fatal Crash on East Columbus Avenue in Springfield

Today, at about 4:56 a.m. troopers assigned to the State Police Barracks in Springfield responded to a single vehicle crash on East Columbus Avenue, at the ramp to Route 91 North, in Springfield that resulted in one fatality.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper Jarred L. Tiberi indicates 26-year-old Robert Delgado of Springfield was operating a 1998 Chevy Malibu on East Columbus Avenue. Delgado lost control of the vehicle as it passed the State Street ramp and it began to spin clockwise. The vehicle continued through the exit ramp to Route 91 North that is located on the left side of East Columbus Avenue. The driver's side of the vehicle collided into a concrete planter and the Jersey barrier on the right side of the of the Route 91 North on ramp. The Chevy continued to spin and came to rest in the middle of the Route 91 North on ramp. Delgado sustained fatal injuries in the crash and was declared deceased at the scene. Francisco Perez, a 21-year-old of Springfield was a passenger in the vehicle and sustained serious injuries. AMR Ambulance transported Perez to Baystate Medical in Springfield. Both Delgado and Perez were not wearing their safety belts at the time of the crash.

Although it appears speed may have been a factor, this crash remains under investigation with the assistance of the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section and the State Police Crime Scene Services Section. The Springfield Police Department and the Springfield Fire Department assisted troopers at the scene.

The ramp form East Columbus Avenue to Route 91 North was closed for approximately 3 hours during the investigation and recovery.
