State Police Respond to Fatal Crash on Route 146 South in Sutton

Today, December 27, 2006 at approximately 4:40 a.m. State Police assigned to the Millbury Barracks responded to a one-vehicle crash on Route 146 South in Sutton that resulted in one fatality.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper Matthew C. Hess indicates William A. Clement, a 33- year old man from North Smithfield, RI. was traveling on Route 146 South in Sutton when he lost control of his 2005 Kia, Rio. The Kia left the right shoulder of the roadway and began to rollover. The vehicle continued to roll, and struck the guardrail adjacent to the ramp from Main Street onto Route 146 South. It continued down an embankment and came to rest upright in a marsh adjacent to the ramp. Clement was not wearing his seatbelt, and at some point during the crash he was ejected from the vehicle. He suffered fatal injuries and was declared deceased at the scene.

Although speed does appear to have been a factor, the crash remains under investigation with the assistance of the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section and the State Police Crime Scene Services Section. The Northbridge Police Department, Northbridge Fire and Emergency Medical Services, the Douglas Police Department, the Sutton Police Department, and Mass Highway assisted troopers at the scene.

The ramp from Main Street onto Route 146 South was closed at the time of the crash and remained closed for approximately 3 ½ hours during the investigation.

No further information is available at this time. Please do not call the barracks directly
