State Police Investigate Route 2 Westminster Crash

On November 27, 2006 at about 11:50 a.m., State Police from the Athol Barracks responded to a one-car crash on Route 2 East, just east of exit 24, in Westminster.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper Paul O'Connor and Trooper Phillip Wilgus indicates that 21-year-old Steven Goguen of Gardner was traveling on Route 2 East in a 1998 Honda Civic when he lost control of the vehicle, causing it to rollover and crash in the median. The driver and his passenger, 37-year-old Leonard Maillet of Gardner, were both unbelted at the time of the crash and were both ejected from the vehicle during the rollover.

Goguen was airlifted to UMass Medical Center for treatment of serious injuries. Maillet was transported by ambulance to Henry Heywood Hospital, but later airlifted to UMass Medical Center for treatment of serious injuries.

While the cause of this crash remains under investigation with the assistance of the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, investigators believe that speed was a factor. No charges have been filed at this time. State Police Crime Scene Services and Westminster Police, Fire and EMS assisted at the scene.

Route 2 was completely closed for about 30 minutes. The westbound travel lanes were reopened at about 1:00 p.m. The eastbound lanes, with the exception of the breakdown lane, remained closed for an additional 40 minutes.
