You Drink & Drive. You Lose. 2006 Labor Day Mobilization Results
The Massachusetts State Police, the Executive Office of Public Safety's Governor's Highway Safety Bureau, and more than 270 local police departments conducted a You Drink & Drive. You Lose. Mobilization involving extra traffic enforcement focused on apprehending impaired drivers between August 18 and September 4, 2006.
Preliminary results from the Labor Day weekend (Friday at 6 pm to 11:59 pm on Monday) portion of this mobilization include:
- There were two motor vehicle-related fatalities on Massachusetts roadways during the holiday period. One involved a pedestrian in Dorchester struck by a passenger vehicle, the other caused by a multi-vehicle crash in Yarmouth apparently caused by a driver who suffered from an emergency medical condition. There were five people killed on Massachusetts roadways during Labor Day weekend in 2005.
- The Massachusetts State Police made 60 OUI arrests, 12 involving repeat offenders, during the holiday period. Sixteen of these 60 OUI arrests were generated by the State Police during two joint state and local police sobriety checkpoints, one in Lowell and one in New Bedford. Both checkpoints involved the State Police's new Breath Alcohol Testing (BAT) Mobile. The New Bedford checkpoint also generated a yet to be determined number of additional OUI arrests processed by the New Bedford Police Department. A full accounting of the OUI arrests made during this You Drink & Drive. You Lose. Mobilization by state and local police won't be available for several weeks.
