State Police Investigate Double Fatal Crash on Route 57 West in Agawam
Preliminary investigation by Trooper John Lanpher indicates that a 1993 Lincoln sedan operated by 82 year-old Burdette Rounds of Springfield was traveling the wrong-way (eastbound) in the westbound lanes of Route 57 near Garden Street in Agawam when he struck a 1995 Mitsubishi hatchback operated by 33 year-old Cinthya Alejandro of Enfield, CT head-on. The Rounds sustained serious injuries as a result of the crash and was subsequently pronounced deceased at the scene. Alejandro and a juvenile passenger of the Mitsubishi sustained serious injuries as a result of the crash and were transported by ambulance to Baystate Medical Center in Springfield. Alejandro was subsequently pronounced deceased at the hospital.
This crash remains under investigation with the assistance of the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section and the State Police Crime Scene Services Section. The Agawam Police Department, Agawam Fire and Ambulance, the Massachusetts Medical Examiner's Office and MassHighways assisted troopers at the scene.
During the crash investigation and vehicle removal, all three travel lanes of Route 57 West were closed for approximately 3.5 hours .
