State Police Investigate Fatal Crash on Route 57 in Agawam

Yesterday, November 14, 2007, at approximately 11:22 p.m., troopers assigned to the State Police Barracks in Springfield responded to a two-vehicle crash on Route 57 East in the area of the Mill Street Overpass in Agawam that resulted in one fatality.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper Jeffrey Perry indicates 45-year old Jack E. Guertin of Feeding Hills was operating a 2006 Chevrolet Avalanche pickup on Route 57 East when he lost control of his vehicle and crashed into a 2002 Dodge Dakota pickup operated by 44-year old Steven Giard of Somers, CT. After colliding with the Dodge the Chevrolet traveled left, struck the median guardrail and continued off the right shoulder of the roadway. It is unknown if Guertin was wearing a seatbelt but at some point during the crash he was ejected from his vehicle, suffered fatal injuries and was declared deceased at the scene. Giard was uninjured in the crash.

This crash remains under investigation with the assistance of the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section and the State Police Crime Scene Services Section. The Agawam Police Department and the Agawam Fire Department assisted troopers at the scene.

Due to the investigation and vehicle recovery the right lane of Route 57 East was closed for approximately 3 hours.

No further information is available at this time. Please do not call the barracks directly.
