State Police Investigate Fatal Crash on Route 93 South in Andover

Yesterday, at approximately 9:15 p.m., troopers assigned to the State Police barracks in Andover responded to a two-vehicle fatal crash on Route 93 South, 1/4 mile north of Route 495 in Andover involving a wrong-way operator.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper Sean Kelley, indicates that 37 year-old Jose Dejesus Rivera of Nashua, NH, was operating a 1993 Cadillac sedan in the second travel lane of Route 93 South in Andover when he was struck head-on by 40 year-old Pamela Duggan of Bedford, MA, operating a 2004 Ford Explorer traveling northbound in the southbound lanes on Route 93 South. Both vehicles caught on fire as a result of the crash. Dejesus Rivera was pronounced deceased at the scene of the crash. Duggan was taken to Beth Israel Hospital by MedFlight Helicopter with serious injuries.

The crash is under investigation with the assistance of the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section. State Police Crime Scene Services Section, Essex County District Attorney's Office, Andover Fire Department, Andover Police Department and Masshighways assisted at the crash scene.

All lanes of Route 93 South were shutdown for over 2 ½ hours during the crash investigation. Traffic was diverted around the crash scene to alternate routes off of Route 93 South onto River Road and Route 213.
