State Police Respond to Fatal Crash on Route 6 in Barnstable

Yesterday, at about 10:15 p.m, State Police from the Yarmouth Barracks Responded to a fatal crash on Route 6 West, one mile east of Exit 6, in Barnstable.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper Steven Culver indicates that a 1999 Saturn Sl1 was traveling on Route 6 West when it spun out of control. A 2004 Toyota Camsol, which was also traveling on Route 6 West, then struck the Saturn. The operator of the Saturn, Thomas J. Smith, age 62, of Hyannis was taken by ambulance to Cape Cod Hospital, where he was later pronounced deceased. The operator of the Toyota, Karyn Lessard, age 26, of Middleboro, was transported by ambulance to Cape Cod Hospital with minor injuries.

The crash remains under investigation with the assistance of the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section. The State Police Crime Scene Services Section and the Massachusetts Highway Department also assisted troopers at the scene. Route 6 West was shut for about 2 hours and 45 minutes at the crash location.
