State Police Investigate Fatal Crash on Route 93 South in Boston

Today, at approximately 12:30 p.m., State Police assigned to the South Boston Barracks responded to a two-vehicle crash on Route 93 South, at the traffic turn-out adjacent to the Ramada Hotel, in Boston that resulted in one fatality and one serious injury.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper Shawn K. Howell indicates 37-year-old Valenti Biondi of Randolph was operating a 2006 Toyota Solara in the third travel lane of Route 93 South. At some point the Solara made contact with a 2005 Ford Explorer that was traveling on Route 93 South in the fourth travel lane. The Ford traveled to the left, struck the Jersey barrier in the median and began to rollover. The Ford continued to roll to the right and across the southbound lanes. It came to rest on its roof in the turn-out, on the right side of the roadway, adjacent to the Ramada Hotel in Boston. Lucy Freitas, 53-year-old from North Dartmouth, was an occupant of the Ford. She was ejected from the vehicle and pinned under the Ford. She was extricated from under the vehicle, with the help of a number of concerned citizens and two off duty Boston Police officers. She was transported to Boston Medical Center, by ambulance, with serious injuries. John Freitas, 55-years-old from North Dartmouth, was the other occupant of the Ford. He sustained fatal injuries in the crash and was declared deceased at the scene. Both Lucy Freitas and John Freitas were not wearing their safety belts at the time of the crash. Biondi did not sustain any injuries in the crash.

This crash remains under investigation with the assistance of the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, the State Police Crime Scene Services Section and the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office. The Boston Fire Department, Boston Emergency Medical Services and Mass Highway assisted troopers at the scene.

The first three travel lanes of Route 93 South were closed at the time of the crash and remain closed for approximately 3 hours pending the investigation. Only the left lane of travel was able to pass on Route 93 South. The right travel lane of Route 93 South remained closed for an additional ½ hour while the vehicle was recovered for the roadway.

No further information is available at this time. Please do not call the barracks directly.
