State Police Investigate Serious Tractor-Trailer Crash on Route 93 in Boston
Preliminary investigation by Trooper Kevin Sweeney indicates 42-year-old Scott R. Ballou of Westbrook, ME was operating a 2006 Mack Tractor-Trailer-Unit on the Tobin Bridge South when he took the ramp for Route 93 South and lost control of the vehicle. The Mack struck the Jersey-Barrier and dislodged a light pole on the left shoulder, and then continued over the barrier and dropped from the elevated roadway. As the Mack dropped the light pole was thrown onto the elevated ramp from Leverett Circle to the Tobin Bridge and it struck a 2005 Acura operated by 39-year-old Rufus L. Simmons III of Charlestown. The Mack continued to fall onto the ramp from Route 93 South to Leverett Circle where it collided with a 2000 Mitsubishi Montero operated by 20-year-old Benjamin Hoffman of Arlington. Rufus and Hoffman sustained minor injuries in the crash and were transported to Mass General Hospital by Boston EMS and an adult female passenger in the Acura was uninjured in the crash. Ballou was wearing his safety belt at the time of the crash, he sustained serious injuries in the crash and was also transported to Mass General by Boston EMS.
This crash remains under investigation with the assistance of the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, the State Police Crime Scene Services Section, the State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Section and the State Police Detective Unit - Suffolk County. The Bunker Hill Community College Police Department, The Boston Fire Department, The Somerville Fire Department, Boston EMS and Mass Turnpike Maintenance assisted troopers at the scene.
During the investigation and vehicle recovery the ramp from Route 93 South to Leverett Circle was closed and the ramp Rutherford Avenue to Storrow Drive were close for approximately 3 hours.
