State Police Respond to Fatal Crash on Route 16 in Chelsea

Today, at about 1:36a.m., State Police from the Revere Barracks responded to a single-vehicle fatal crash on Route 16 West at Union Street in Chelsea.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper Geoffrey Stokes indicates that a 1996 Chevrolet Camaro was traveling on Route 16 West, when it left the road to the right, struck an island, then hit a curb, traveled through some bushes and struck a house. The operator of the Chevrolet was declared deceased at the scene. His name is being withheld pending proper next of kin notification. No one was injured inside the house.

Though the crash remains under investigation with the assistance of the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, it appears that excessive speed may have been a factor in the crash.

Two travel lanes Route 16 West were shut down for approximately 2 ½ hours at the crash scene. The State Police Crime Scene Service Section, the Chelsea Police Department and the Chelsea Fire Department assisted troopers at the scene.
