State Police Investigate Fatal Crash on Route 1 North in Danvers

Today at approximately 9:12 a.m., Troopers assigned to the State Police Barracks in Danvers responded to a serious crash on Route 1 North in Danvers that resulted in one fatality.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper Michael Harvey indicates that 18-year-old Buck C. Bishop of Danvers was operating a 1999 Volvo S70 sedan on Route 1 South in Danvers when his vehicle crossed over into the northbound lane and collided head-on with a 2000 Mercury Sable sedan operated by 73-year-old Joyce E. Oliver of West Peabody. Immediately after the initial collision, a 1997 Honda Civic sedan traveling on Route 1 North, operated by 25-year-old Matthew B. Schlosser of Cambridge, collided with both the Volvo and the Mercury in the northbound lane. Bishop suffered minor injuries in the crash and was transported by ambulance to Beverly Hospital. Schlosser and the front seat passenger in the Honda, 31-year-old Heather K. Rahhal of Dorchester both suffered minor injuries in the crash and were transported by ambulance to Beverly Hospital. Oliver suffered serious injuries in the crash and was transported by ambulance to Beverly Hospital where she was later declared deceased.

This crash remains under investigation with the assistance of the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section, the Essex County State Police Detective Unit and the State Police Crime Scene Services Section. The Danvers Police Department, Danvers Fire Department, Topsfield Police Department, Topsfield Fire Department and MassHighways assisted Troopers at the scene.

During the crash investigation and vehicle removal, Route 1 North and South were closed for approximately 1½ hours. During this time, northbound traffic was diverted off Route 1 at the Ferncroft Rotary in Danvers and southbound traffic was diverted off at Route 97 in Topsfield.
