State Police Investigate Fatal Crash on Route 195 East in Fairhaven

Today, at approximately 2:55 a.m. troopers assigned to the State Police Barracks in Dartmouth responded to a single vehicle crash on Route 195 East, ½ mile prior toe Route 240 (exit 18) in Fairhaven that resulted in one fatality.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper Matthew Lavoie indicates 25-year-old Ricardo Cabral of New Bedford was operating a 2001 Volkswagen Jetta on Route 195 East. The vehicle was traveling in the right lane and at some point Cabral lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle traveled off the right shoulder of the roadway, struck a highway sign, rolled over and came to rest upright in the woods. Cabral was ejected form the vehicle and sustained serious injures. He was transported to St. Luke's Hospital in New Bedford by ambulance where he was later declared deceased. Cabral was not wearing his safetybelt at the time of the crash.

Although speed appears to have been a factor, this crash remains under investigation with the assistance of the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section and the State Police Crime Scene Services Section. Fairhaven EMS assisted troopers at the scene.

During the vehicle recovery and investigation all lanes of Route 195 East remained open.

No further information is available at this time. Please do not call the barracks directly.
