State Police Investigate Fatal Crash on Route 2 in Lexington

Yesterday, Friday January 26, 2007, at approximately 10:50 p.m. troopers assigned to the State Police Barracks in Concord responded to a single vehicle crash on Route 2 West prior to Spring Street (exit 53) in Lexington that resulted in one fatality.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper Richard A. Cronin Jr. indicates a 17-year-old male was operating a 2000 Audi A6 sedan on Route 2 West in the left travel lane. At some point the operator lost control of the vehicle, it continued across all the westbound lanes and off the right shoulder of the roadway. The vehicle rolled over, struck a tree and came to rest upright in the area of that tree. The operator and his 18-year-old passenger, Andrew C. Stone of Lexington suffered serious injuries in the crash. They were both transported to Lahey Clinic by ambulance where Andrew C. Stone later died from his injuries and was declared deceased. It is unknown if either person was wearing their safetybelts at the time of the crash.

Although alcohol appears to have been a factor, this crash remains under investigation with the assistance of the State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section and the State Police Crime Scene Service Section. The Lexington Police Department, the Lexington Fire Department, Lexington EMS, the Waltham Fire Department and Mass Highway assisted troopers at the scene.

The right and middle travel lanes of Route 2 West were closed for approximately 2 hours during the investigation and vehicle recovery. The left lane remained open for traffic.

No further information is available at this time. Please do not call the barracks directly.
